National Child Abuse Statistics & Prevalence of Child Abuse in America:
7,500 children are tortured in foster care what is technically government protection.
The incidence of neglect, physical and sexual abuse of children in foster care systems is feared to be significantly higher that the incidence in the general population.
Everyday five to twelve children in the U.S. are murdered by a parent or caretaker.
18,000 are permanently disabled every year.
565,000 are seriously injured every year.
Three million children were reported as victims of child abuse and neglect in 1996 in the United States.
In 1997, 36,808 incidents of child abuse were reported to the Orange County child abuse registry - approximately 3,600 a month and 120 per day. 3,200 were removed from their homes and placed in Orangewood Children's Home. LA County received over 240,000 child abuse reports in the same year.
Head trauma is the leading cause of child abuse death among babies. This includes shaken baby syndrome in which 25% of victims die and the majority of survivors suffer brain damage.
In 1996, approx. 80% of child abuse fatalities were children under the age of 5, approximately 50% were children under one year old.
Child abuse kills more children in America than do accidental falls, drowning, choking on food, suffocation or fires in the home.
