FACTS ABOUT VIOLENCE & ABUSE IN THE LIVES OF CHILDREN
Child Sexual Abuse:
One in four female children will be molested by age 18.
One in six males will be molested by age 18 - 80%-90% of the offenders are family members or close friends of the family.
45% of sexual abuse victims are under age six years of age.
One in twenty men to one in ten is a pedophile who molests over 150 child victims.
California has 72,000 registered sex offenders, 3,500 in Orange County.
Domestic Violence:
There were 26,000 reports of Domestic Violence made to the police in Orange County in 1996.
In California, 50% of all women murdered were killed by a husband or boyfriend.
More women are injured as a result of Domestic Violence than from other causes including rapes, muggings and car accidents.
These statistics illustrate a tragic point: women and children are at more risk inside their homes than outside.
Teen Pregnancy:
More than 4,500 babies were born last year to Orange County teenagers - 70% of them to Latinas. This does not address the number of pregnancies that were aborted.
Teen mothers are less likely to complete high school, more likely to be dependent on welfare, struggle with unemployment, drugs, and alcohol and child abuse than teenagers who postpone parenting.
The number of children who get pregnant before the age of 13 has doubled in the last decade. 25% of California's teen births are second and third babies. The U.S. has the highest teen birth rate in the industrialized world, and California has the highest in the nation.
